Trésors du Louvre: A New Game Powered by Open Data

In partnership with the Louvre Museum's open data initiative, the Gérard Foundation has created Art Explorer — an interactive game featuring 18 masterpieces, designed to make art history accessible and engaging for young audiences worldwide.

Art as a universal language

Art history has long been perceived as elitist or inaccessible. Yet behind every canvas lies a story — of an era, a culture, a vision. Art Explorer was designed to break down those barriers, inviting players to engage with masterpieces not as distant objects in a museum, but as living conversations.

The Louvre's open data initiative

The Louvre Museum has made thousands of works from its collection available under open licenses through its digital collections platform. This initiative allows developers, educators, and creators to build tools and experiences that bring great art to new audiences. The Gérard Foundation is proud to be among the organisations leveraging this resource for educational purposes.

How the game works

Players choose from three challenge modes: identifying the artist, the art movement, or the country of origin of each work. Each session presents 9 masterpieces in sequence, with four multiple-choice options per question. The game adapts to the player's language and is accessible on any device. At the end, players receive a personalised score and cultural profile.

Beyond the game

Art Explorer is just the beginning. The Gérard Foundation plans to expand its cultural gaming platform with content from additional museum partnerships, covering African art, Islamic art, and contemporary creation. If you are a cultural institution interested in collaborating, we welcome your outreach.

Open data is a gift to culture. By combining the Louvre's heritage with interactive technology, we can bring art to millions of young people who might never visit a museum.
